Williams Sonoma Grew by Selling to Businesses While Home Sales Stalled

With home buying still slow, Williams Sonoma leaned into business customers. The Hustle reports its stock up more than 200 percent in three years, business revenue up 14.5 percent in the quarter, and contract revenue up 20 percent, with cruise ships, senior living, and student housing next.

A furniture business with too few home buyers

Home sales in 2026 are slightly higher than last year, but remain well below the long running average, as high prices and mortgage rates keep buyers sidelined. When people stop buying homes, they stop filling them, and home retailers feel it quickly. Value City Furniture liquidated.

Williams Sonoma Inc., the company behind Pottery Barn and West Elm, went the other way. The Hustle reports its stock has risen by more than 200 percent over three years. Part of that is a customer base that analyst Neil Saunders of GlobalData describes as more insulated from economic stress. The other part is a second business hiding inside the first one.

The second buyer is a business

Alongside selling to households, the company leaned into selling to businesses that furnish spaces on a schedule rather than on a whim. Saunders notes that selling to businesses is different, but not so different that it becomes inefficient, so the company can fish in both pools and balance its revenue.

The numbers from the company 2026 second quarter earnings call, as reported by The Hustle, show the second pool growing faster:

  • Business to business revenue increased 14.5 percent in the quarter
  • Contract revenue grew 20 percent, and trade revenue grew 12 percent, per finance chief Jeff Howie
  • Contract revenue accounted for 36 percent of the business to business segment

Where the business orders are coming from

The company named cruise ships, senior living, and student housing as markets it is expanding into, and the completed projects show the range: Virgin Hotels in New York City, Signature Aviation Miami Executive Airport here in Florida, the University of Texas at Austin Hardin House, and the Carneros Inn in Napa.

There is a logic to the list. Cruise ships, dormitories, and care homes get refreshed far more often than a family living room, because wear is constant and appearance is part of what their customers pay for. A business buyer is not decorating once. It is maintaining a standard, on a cycle, with a budget for it.

It is not the only brand fishing in both pools

Saunders points out that IKEA runs a large business operation for office furnishings and Amazon runs a huge one generating billions. The shared pattern is a focus on what business buyers need: volume, durability, repeatable ordering, and accountability.

There is a risk. Styles that appear in every hotel and dorm can start to feel common, which dulls the premium feel sold to households. The company is betting most guests and students will never notice, and that steady contract revenue is worth more than the lost mystique.

The lesson for smaller brands is direct

Most small brands and service businesses sell to one buyer and stop. The Williams Sonoma move is to ask a simple question when that buyer slows down: who else already needs this same skill or product, on a schedule, with a budget?

  • A slow consumer market does not mean demand vanished, it may have moved to a different buyer
  • Business buyers purchase on cycles, which makes revenue easier to plan around
  • The offer usually needs adjusting, not rebuilding, because the craft underneath stays the same
  • One contract customer can be worth a season of one time household sales

Coverage businesses can run the same play

The parallel for a Florida creative business is close. A couple books a wedding once. A venue, festival, or hotel group books coverage again and again, on dates known months ahead. It is the same craft pointed at a buyer with a calendar and a budget.

Williams Sonoma did not abandon home buyers. It built a second pool to fish in while the first one was quiet. When your main market stalls, the useful question is rarely how to shout louder at it. It is who else is already buying what you make.
