Stop Sending Slop Grenades: The AI Quality Rule That Wins Clients

AI makes it easy to send a polished report that says nothing. Shopify's CEO has a name for it, and a rule that separates creators who win trust from creators who lose it.

The 15 page report that said nothing

The Rundown AI's Nate Grahek told a story this week that every founder will recognize. A colleague he trusted started using an AI assistant, then sent over a 15 page report that looked immaculate and said almost nothing. Reading between the lines and decoding the filler became his friend's job.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke has a name for this: slop grenades. Someone pulls the pin, AI writes 15 pages, and everyone on the receiving end absorbs the damage. His sharpest question cuts right through it: why did we invent decompression algorithms just to write more words than anyone needs?

Why this hits creators hardest

Your reputation is the product. Protect it with a quality filter.

When you sell creative work, your reputation is your product. One off brand carousel, one hollow AI generated video, one proposal that reads like everyone else's, and the client quietly files you under replaceable.

This is exactly why I keep my rule simple: clarity beats cool every time. When I tested new content pipelines earlier this year, I killed work that was technically impressive but off brand. The client should never have to decode your work. If they have to, you already lost.

The 3 step check before anything leaves your hands

Read it like the client. Cut 30 percent. Check the brand.

Run every piece of AI assisted work through this before it ships:

  • Read it like the client. If you cannot explain the main point in one sentence, the AI did not write a deliverable, it wrote a decoration.
  • Cut 30 percent. AI writes long because it was trained on the internet. Your job is the editing the model cannot do for you.
  • Check the brand. Does this sound like you, look like you, feel like you? If you could swap your logo for a competitor's and nobody would notice, start over.

The bigger opportunity

Here is the part nobody talks about. Every inbox filling up with slop grenades makes genuinely clear work stand out more. The bar for looking professional just dropped. The bar for being worth reading just rose.

Creators and founders who build a quality filter now own the next wave. AI is the assistant. You are still the director. Act like it.

Want this mindset applied to your brand? My AI film and UGC services are built on this exact standard: every deliverable gets a human quality pass before it ships. Book a shoot session or an AI brand spot and see what finished work feels like.
