Gemini Now Screens Scam Texts in Android Messages, if You Turn It On
Google is adding an opt in Enhanced Protection mode to Android Messages that lets Gemini read unknown sender chats for scam intent. The Neuron walks through the checks, the limits, and the size of the problem.

The scams with no link are the hard ones
Most people know to distrust a strange link. The harder scams never send one. The Neuron cites a University of Florida study of 175,430 user reported scam texts. Link based scams, like fake toll and postal notices, reuse nearly identical scripts, which makes them easy for filters to catch. Reply based scams, like romance and wrong number texts, adapt to each person they talk to, and that group grew much faster.
A wrong number text gives a keyword filter nothing to work with. The conversation sounds normal for several messages, and the request for money arrives only after trust is built. That is the gap Google is aiming Gemini at. Reading intent across a whole conversation is a language task, and it is the kind of task a large model is built for.
What Enhanced Protection actually does
Google is expanding scam detection in the Android Messages app with a new mode called Enhanced Protection. When a number that is not in your contacts texts you, cloud based Gemini models can read the conversation and judge whether it looks like a scam. Google says the messages stay private, even from Google. The Neuron notes it could not verify that claim, which is a fair note to keep in mind.
The second check works on the phone itself:
- On device Gemini Nano checks unfamiliar links against real time web signals before you tap
- The link check needs a Pixel 10 or newer, a Galaxy S26, or select other devices
- The mode is opt in, not automatic, and rolls out over the coming weeks
- Google describes warnings, not blocking, so the final decision stays with you
The numbers behind the feature
The scale explains why Google is spending effort here. Text scam losses reported to the FTC reached at least 470 million dollars in 2024. Total reported fraud losses hit a record 15.9 billion dollars in 2025, with texting as the top reported contact method. In a Google released 2025 survey across the United States, India, and Brazil, Android users were 58 percent likelier to report receiving zero scam texts in a week.
There are real limits. The feature covers unknown senders only. The Florida study found scammers often move their targets to other chat apps partway through, where this protection does not follow. And a warning only helps if the person reading it slows down, which is exactly what a good scam is designed to prevent.
What to do with this as a creator or business owner
Turn the mode on when it reaches your phone, and walk your family and your clients through turning it on too. For anyone who books work through texts and direct messages, scam inquiries are part of the job now. Fake booking requests, fake brand deals, and fake payment notices all arrive in the same inbox as real money.
Build your own verification habits on top of the tool. Confirm big requests on a second channel. Never move a work conversation to a new app just because a stranger asks. Treat any request that creates urgency as a signal to pause. Gemini can flag intent, but your process is what protects your deposits, your accounts, and your name.
