Art Fair Tampa Takes Over the Convention Center October 15 to 18

Art Fair Tampa runs October 15 to 18 at the Tampa Convention Center, with hundreds of artists from across the country, a VIP opening night on October 15, and free admission Friday through Sunday. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay carried the invitation, and it is aimed at first time buyers as much as seasoned collectors.

Four days, hundreds of artists, one roof

Art Fair Tampa takes over the Tampa Convention Center from October 15 to 18, bringing together hundreds of artists from across the country for four days of painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and everything that refuses a single label. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay carried the announcement in its October 9 email with a simple invitation: be a part of art.

The fair is built for two audiences at once. Collectors and galleries come ready to invest in original work. Everyone else comes to walk, look, and find the one piece that will not leave their head on the drive home. A fair this size serves both because the artists themselves are standing there, ready to talk about how the work was made.

The nights and days, in order

Creative Loafing's email kept the details refreshingly plain, so here they are the same way.

  • VIP opening night is Thursday, October 15, with first access to the collection before public hours
  • Opening night includes a complimentary welcome glass of bubbly or wine, live music, and artist demonstrations
  • Admission from Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18 is completely free
  • Exhibiting artists work across painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media
  • The venue is the Tampa Convention Center, on the downtown waterfront

Why the free days are the real invitation

Plenty of art events accidentally talk only to people who already buy art. This one priced its public days at zero, which changes who walks in: families downtown for the day, students, new homeowners with one bare wall and a budget, and Tampa Bay locals who would never call themselves collectors. Some of them will leave with a print. A few will leave with an original and a story about meeting the person who made it.

That is how a scene grows its next decade of buyers, and it is the same reason we point our Event Radar at weekends like this one. If you go, go on a free day, take your time on the second lap, and ask one artist how a piece was made. The answer is usually the best free thing at the fair.
